Today's Hero Tip

Make a leaf pile for hedgehogs to sleep in.

This is the autumn tip. Add your town for a tip that matches today's weather.

About your town and weather

When you look up a town, the town name you type is sent to Open-Meteo's geocoding service. To get the weather, Open-Meteo's forecast service receives that town's approximate coordinates (rounded to 1 decimal place, about 10 km). Open-Meteo can see your internet address as with any website. We never ask for your exact location. Your chosen town and the last weather result stay in this browser, and the weather is saved for up to 3 hours. We don't store your town on our servers.

Little nature lovers with big hearts

About Tiny Tree Heroes

We're Tiny Tree Heroes. We care about birds, animals, trees and all the little living things that share our planet.

We share the small ways we look after nature. We put up bird feeders, help trees grow, and learn how to be gentle with animals. You don't need to be a grown-up to make a difference—you can start with one kind thing today.

Come along on our nature adventures, and become a Tiny Tree Hero with us.

How we care for nature

Little actions, lots of kindness. These sketches show some of the ways we love helping our world.

What we do for nature

  • We put up bird feeders

On our balcony, in our garden, and on trees in the park. Birds need extra food in winter, and they love to visit.

  • We help animals, birds and sea creatures

Animals share our world. Being kind to them means giving them the right food, clean water, and space to live.

  • We plant trees

Trees give us clean air, shade, and homes for birds and bugs. Every tree we plant will keep growing for years and years.

Our nature diary

Things we've done to help nature. We'll keep adding more!

  • Filled the bird feeder on our balcony.
  • Hung a feeder in our garden for the little birds.
  • Hung a feeder on a tree in the park, so more birds could eat.
  • Planted a new tree to help the forest grow.

Help more animals

Every creature needs something different. Pick one to find out how you can help.

What should I feed the birds?

👍 Birds love

  • Sunflower hearts and seed mixes
  • Unsalted peanuts, in a mesh feeder
  • Fat balls (take them out of the net bag)
  • Mealworms
  • Chopped apples and pears
  • A dish of fresh, clean water

✋ Please don't give

  • Salty food, like crisps
  • Lots of bread (it fills them up but isn't healthy)
  • Milk
  • Leftover cooking fat
  • Mouldy food

💡 Grown-up tip: wash feeders every week or two, and hang them where cats can't hide nearby.

Everyday planet habits

Small things you do every day add up to a big help for the Earth.

  • Save water

Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth, and take quick showers.

  • Save energy

Switch off lights, TVs and tablets when you leave the room.

  • Walk, scoot or cycle

For short trips, leave the car at home. It's good for you and the air.

  • Use a lunchbox

A box you use again and again means less plastic wrap thrown away.

  • Pass things on

Give clothes, books and toys you've outgrown to someone who needs them.

  • Waste less food

Take only what you'll eat. Peels and cores can go in the food bin.

Nature through the year

Nature needs different help in each season. We've opened the one we're in now.

Autumn: September to November

  • Make a leaf pile in a quiet corner for hedgehogs to sleep in.
  • Collect an acorn or conker and plant it in a pot to grow your own tree.
  • Clean out old nest boxes so they're ready for next spring.
  • Tree planting season begins. Look for a community planting day near you.
  • Before Bonfire Night, check bonfire piles for sleeping hedgehogs.

Become a Tiny Tree Hero
